Milk Baths **Recipe Included

Essential Oils and Baths….
Screen Shot 2016-01-15 at 11.15.21 AM

So while preparing for a relaxing bath the other night. I texted a friend asking for relaxing oil combinations. She responded with the following recipe:

5 drops of serenity
2 drops of lavender
3 drops of white fir

I also had lavender/chamomile bath salts I added. My friend then followed up the text with:

MIX WITH 1/2 C EPSOM SALTS OR MILK

Umm, wait, what? This is not something I had previously done, but is very important. Usually my husband and I put the oils directly into the tub and you can visually see them floating on the surface of the water. By adding them to either the epsom salt or the milk the oils are broken down and can better be mixed with the water to be absorbed by your skin.

So since I wasn’t previously aware of this I just grab the milk out of the refrigerator and added the oils. (I had already add my bath salts prior to receiving this text message.) It worked amazingly well and I feel as though I slept better last night.

So this morning I was looking online and there are indeed better ways to prepare oils for baths. Here is a recipe that is new to me that I can’t wait to try out:

It’s a 2:1:1 ratio of powdered milk** (moisturizes), baking soda (softens skin) and cornstarch (soothes irritation).

So if you use 1 C of powered milk then utilize a 1/2 C of each baking soda and cornstarch. It it recommended to store this mixture in a glass or metal container because again plastic is not recommended when using some oils. To this mixture add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil(s). Allow this mix to sit at least 24 hours prior to using. This specific mix would be good for quantity two baths.

**Note: The higher the fat content of the powdered milk the better and more moisture your skin will absorb. The articles that I found recommended powdered goats milk or coconut milk. I haven’t done too much shopping around for these items, but with the internet I think it’s safe to assume one can purchase anything they’d like. If not there are sheep across the road perhaps I could sneak over in the night and milk them?!?

As always please feel free to share recipes, ideas or recommendations. I love hearing them.

Until then,
Happy Oiling

What is a diffuser?

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.41.34 PMSo a diffuser gives you the benefits of a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer and aromatherapy all in one! The diffuser further breaks down the oils into micropartials and circulates them into the air. There are quite a few different products on the market. I happen to have a DoTERRA one, but I’m sure there are others that will get the job done. Just be sure to read reviews and be an informed consumer as some of them are not built to handle citrus oils and can either clog or stop working as a result. For those not familiar with the citrus essential oils they can actually eat through plastic. For instance, I learned this the hard way. I had a Tervis hot/cold beverage cup that I liked to drink water out of. My mother-in-law visited and was encouraging me to try the oils so I did (leomon). Unfortunately for me I didn’t know about them eating through plastic and put them in the water in my plastic Tervis where it ate away the inside layer of plastic. That was only a few drops in a 24 oz container, these oils are nothing to mess with! I have the lotus diffuser as photoed below, but will be purchasing several of the petal diffusers in the near future for each of our bedrooms.

I like to run On Guard through ours upon arriving home in the evening. I posted about On Guard last night, but it’s pretty much amazing at helping to fight and kill cold and flu bacteria. Plus it has a pleasant smell that also deodorizes our home. For those of you unaware I’ve become somewhat of a hippie in the past few years. I prefer not to burn any candles having small children and I’ve never really been a fan of potpourri or “canned” scents. So this is perfect for our family.

Another sweet treat that I have recently discovered with the assistance of my sister-in-law is Holiday Joy.

It’s pretty much like Christmas trapped in a bottle. I purchased mine a little before Thanksgiving and love it! Just a warning it is a seasonal oil and I have been told it sells out rather quickly!

Zyrtec addiction….

So my husband has been taking Zyrtec (Cetirizine) on a daily basis for well over five years. He recently decided that he would like to stop taking it, well that turns out to be easier said than done. You would think that since Zyrtec is available as an OTC drug it’s safe right?! Well, I’m not so sure anymore.

Jake’s on day four of what I’m going to refer to as Zyrtec withdrawals. For the first three days I made fun of him and actually encouraged him to run to the store and purchase more. Last night we sat down and Googled his symptoms, as it turns out there are a large amount of individuals that are addicted to the Zyrtec and trying to quit it. (If only we could come up with a remedy to assist these people we would be rich!)

So, a little bit about his symptoms. We’ve known anytime he neglected to take his daily pill as he would get really itchy at exactly the 24 hour mark. Well, being off four days he’s incredibly itchy. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. I really enjoy the show Drugs Inc. and it’s the closest thing I’ve seen to a drug withdrawal outside of that show. It’s kind of scary. The itch comes and goes and travels throughout his body. He’s experience this itchiness in his inner ear, head, neck, face, arms, everywhere.

My sister-in-law and fellow wellness advocate suggested he take a daily shot of two drops of each of the following essential oils: lavender, peppermint and lemon. Put these six drops in a shot glass and top of with water. This seems to help temporarily, about an hour and then the itchiness returns. I have also made him a rollerball concoction of the same oils that he can apply topically or put in his hands rub together and “huff” for lack of a better term. Again these things only offer temporary relief. This is interesting to me because another individual we know utilizes the same concoction of oils and they work for him. He however was not taking Zyrtec on a daily basis, but more of an irregular one. When he decided to stop taking the pills he did not experience the itches. (To be honest, I don’t really know they symptoms he had.)

I did extensive research last night trying to find information on homeopathic remedies that have worked for others. Either I really am the worst Googler ever (as Jake often tells me) or there is no one thing that works for multiple individuals. I ironically found a post on a blog where an individual stated they had tried DoTERRA’s TriEase Soft Gels and swears by them. At this point Jake has decided he definitely would like to kick the Zyrtec so I went ahead and purchased these oils. (I will have to update you once they arrive and he starts taking them.)

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.17.29 PM

Another suggestion offered up to us was for him to put straight lavender oil or diluted lavender oil on the itch as it is a natural antihistamine. This sounds ideal, but with the itchy constantly on the move it would not be plausible or affordable to cover him in oil from head to toe. Therefore, we have not tried this remedy out yet.

If anyone has personally gone through anything like this or knows someone who has we would love to hear your story. More importantly what was done to overcome this itch. I fear if we are unable to get this under control in the next few days that he will end up back on the pill which is ultimately the root cause of the present day problem. It all seems very cyclical to me.

UPDATE: After posting this I realized that DoTERRA has an introductory oil kit that has the three oils used in this concoction.

Homemade Wart Remover

So for a few years now my oldest daughter has had a wart on her finger. It never really bothered anything so we just left it. Well in the past year the warts have started to spread. They are on her fingers, palm of her hand, knee and ankle. Strange right? Anyway, being 5 going on 15 they have started to “bother” her.

This summer we purchased some of that over the counter wart freezer stuff. I think she let us do it once or twice, but judging by the screams of pain….this wasn’t something for her. The morning after freezing the warts they would turn white and the skin would sluff of leaving a open oozing sore to heal. Frankly, it wasn’t for me either as this looked worse than the warts.

So in talking with my sister-in-law one of her children also had warts. She used a roller ball of oregano and fractionated coconut oil morning and night for a few weeks and the warts are now gone. I figured there was nothing to lose and we should at least try it.

So I’ve been telling you about the essential oil book that I’ve purchased. Below is an example of the information you can get. It’s a sweet book. So I can look up a single oil, an oil blend or an aliment. There’s a plethora of other information in the book too. For instance, there are different spots on your hands, feet and ears that will help internal parts of your body. If you don’t want to purchase it, it might be a good idea to see if you local public library has something similar that you could check out and use as a reference.

IMG_6589

As you can see the recipe they recommend has a few more ingredients than the one I choose to make. I’m not sure if they are really necessary as per my sister-in-law she’s experienced success without them.

I choose a 10mL roller roller, fractionated coconut oil and 20 drops of oregano. I measure the oil in first and then gently top off the bottle with pumps of coconut oil until full. I gently put in the roller ball, shook the ball and applied to the warts. I’m pretty sure the entire process took me less than 5 minutes.

Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 6.49.52 AM

The pictures below are the warts on night one after application. We decided not to bandage them, but to let her sit until the oil dried. She sat at the island in the kitchen making a Christmas list out of a catalog that had come in the mail during this time. I think another 5 minutes or so and she was off again.

I will be sure to monitor her warts and post updates in the near future so you may see for yourself the power of these oils.

Here’s what the doTerra site has to say about Oregano:

Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 6.49.33 AM

Do you know what the best part of the entire process was? I got to spend quality time with my daughter. She sat nearby and talked with me while I researched and mixed the oil, then we hung out as it dried. She didn’t scream in pain, there were no tears and this morning they aren’t falling off and making her susceptible to infection. Come on, we all know that kids are a cesspool of germs. The last thing I need right now is for her to get an infection due to trying to remove warts.

Friday nights in your 30’s….roller balls

So as I was preparing to make some homemade roller balls for common family ailments I couldn’t help but laugh. I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would be sitting at home married, with two kids, mixing oils. Haha! I love it!

Anyway, yesterday was a great day. I received several of my doTerra buy one get one offers, my fractionated coconut oil and roller ball bottles. So there was only one thing left to do…..start mixing.

IMG_6582

I don’t really know if there is a right way to do this or not, but I guess this is going to be one of those learn as you go projects. I purchased the roller balls from Amazon.

Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 6.52.40 AMI selected this particular set because of the steel roller balls. I was reading the reviews and when mixing (usually more citrus blends) the oils can actually eat the plastic, I would assume this would/could create a huge mess. Um, yeah no thank you! In putting these together I found that the ball part that slides into the bottle went in firmly, upon shaking they did not come loose and they roll nicely.

I also choose the brown bottles as it prevents the sunlight from breaking down the essential oils and therefore making my potions less effective. There are other fun colors, but I went with these as they are good value for my money. I’ll probably order some pink ones in the near future to assist my oldest daughter in finding a little more joy in using oils and assist in her recognizing which ones she can use.

I also purchased the fractionated coconut oil from Amazon. As with all the products on Amazon there are literally hundreds of brand to choose from. Honestly, my sister-in-law recommended it as she utilizes it for her roller balls. So far it seems to work great, but it’s only been a few hours so take my recommendation for what it’s worth.

Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 6.55.05 AM

That’s it, that’s all you need. Three items coconut oil, bottles and your favorite scent. for 5mL bottles you would use 10 drops of essential oil per bottle and 10mL bottles you would use 20 drops. The bottles I made last night were indeed 10mL bottles. I just recently learned about the roller ball method and have actually just been using straight oil the past few years. While there is nothing wrong with doing this and it certainly works, it leads to utilizing more of the oils than necessary. We all know these oils are an investment so I am certainly interested in getting the most out of my money.

I only ordered 6 bottles for the first time, because I wasn’t entirely sure that they would live up to my standards and that I would like them. Well in hindsight that turned out to be a big mistake as I find I’m going to need to order more sooner than anticipated. However, with my luck if I had ordered more they wouldn’t have worked and I would be packing up and shipping them back today. Hahaha!

Anyway, I made three bottles last night as I was certain that we would use them on a fairly regular basis. I made a concoction of oregano and coconut oil for my daughter’s warts, I made a peppermint roller ball and an On Guard.

Thanks for reading and happy mixing!

On Guard

Seeing that cold and flu season is coming up I wanted to share my absolute favorite essential oil, On Guard. It completely reminds me of a medieval knight in shining armor every time I say the name….maybe that’s what they were going for? Anyway, back to the topic on hand. So I have two small children that attend school and daycare and I’m sure they bring home a plethora of germs. I have made it part of my daily routine to run a few drops of On Guard through my diffuser when we get home to assist in killing these germs and keeping us all a little heathier.

On Guard

A few weeks ago, I noticed the girls both had runny noses as well as a cough and were starting to come down with something. It was at this point my husband asked for the On Guard and proceeded to put a few drops in some water and drink. For those of you unaware this essential oil supports a healthy immune system and protects against environmental threats. Please keep in mind that I’m not a medical professional and I am not saying that this product will keep you healthy. I’m simply sharing my experience with you, and you can make up your own mind. He managed to remain free from illness even though the girls continued to fight something for the next week.

I’m not very pushy, and I’m trying to get my children on board. I figured the best way to do this is much like I did and witness the benefits first hand. My oldest insisted on taking cough syrup the first few days, until it was gone. Then one evening she allowed me to run some On Guard infused coconut oil on her feet before bed and in the morning she was much better. It could be she was near the end of the cold too, we’ll never know, but slowly I’m gaining her trust and interest in the products. My little one on the other hand doesn’t have much say in the matter. She got oregano one night and On Guard the next.

Funny story about the oregano on her feet before bed….so my sister-in-law is very knowledgeable in the oils so I go to her with a lot of questions. Anyway, I text her around dinner time to see if it is safe to put On Guard on my 21 month olds feet? Please note that each oil has different “safety” information if you will. This is why I purchased a detailed book to assist me in my journey. Although, sometimes I’m lazy and just reach out to others for help and that’s okay. Anyway, my sister-in-law sends back to use oregano cut with coconut oil instead. I find the comment odd, but proceed. I put my daughter to bed that evening smelling much like an Italian restaurant. (It wasn’t a terrible smell, just very distinct.) In the morning she appears unchanged and still coughing. Later in the day I receive a text from my sister-in-law apologizing for sending bad information. I had texted her while she was cooking dinner. She has four children and I’m sure this is a stressful time. Anyway she had misread my text and thought I had asked about what to use on athlete’s foot. Ahahaha lucky for both of us the oregano didn’t hurt her, but it didn’t help fight her cold.

My little story goes to show, even with experience you are going to make some mistakes. And you know what? That’s okay, it’s all part of the journey. The next evening I put the On Guard cut with coconut oil on her feet and in the morning she was feeling much better.

This product has become a staple in our home and a go to for a number of different needs. As I pulled up the product information page that I am sharing with you I read that you can soak apples in water with a few drops for a healthy immune boosting snack. Our family eats a great deal of honey crisp apples so I’m going to try this out in the near future. I’m not sure if it will alter the taste. I will not get the pleasure of trying this out myself as this is another essential oil that is cautioned against while pregnant. I seem to find that to be the case with many of the oils, my assumption is that the effects on the fetus are unknown and when in doubt it’s best to leave it out.

I would encourage the purchase of On Guard to assist you and your loved ones from getting sick during this cold and flu season. I choose to run mind through a diffuser, but also realize that the two purchased together can be a large investment for some. There’s nothing wrong with going slow and figuring out if this product is right for you.

Stay well my friends,

Amy

Thank you!

Good Morning!

So I think there’s been a change in atmospheric pressure. I woke up this morning with the absolute worst headache and just had a hard time getting up and going. Seeing my essential oil book said that peppermint was to be used with caution during pregnancy, I decided to pass and take two Tylenol. As you may recall I’m pregnant and that’s about all that I’m allowed to take. Needless to say after two Tylenol and some contraband coffee, I still have a headache. I’m not very prone to headaches so I might be handling this one like a bit of a baby myself.

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 9.38.53 AM

As I get ready for the day I decide to check out the doTerra buy one get one (BOGO) offer of the day. After all today is the last day and I wanted to ensure I didn’t miss out on anything great. The offer today is purchase breathe get citrus bliss free! If I hadn’t just ordered a bottle of breathe on Sunday I so would have done this offer, but my bank account thanked me after I decided to pass.Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 9.39.12 AMScreen Shot 2015-11-20 at 9.39.25 AM

Then something catches my eye….I have a customer and they placed an order under me!!! Do you realize what this means? It’s my fifth day selling doTerra, I have not been overly active in discussing my new endeavors with anyone, but you guys! This means that someone actually reads my blog! I’m so super excited. For this complete stranger (I will withhold your name out of respect) have completely made my day. Even if you hadn’t made a purchase it’s so awesome to know that I may have at least one follower!

This is exactly what I needed this morning. It’s easy to start to question yourself and know if what you are doing is right. I had been on the fence for years about both my blog and doTerra. I seriously watched my mother-in-law and sister-in-law (both doTerra members) and answered a ton of questions before pulling the trigger. I started to dabble with the oils a little here and there. I purchased the kit on my own and read as much as I could. After witnessing first-hand the benefits of these oils and several years later I am fully onboard.

I’m not here to shove anything down your throat. I’m here as a semi-knowledgeable acquaintance that would love to share my experiences with you. If I don’t have the answer, which is more than likely going to be the case, I love to research and ask questions and get answers. I feel that learning should never stop….I’m not talking in just a classroom setting, but daily. If you look for it and seek it out, there is something to be learned every day. On this note, if you do read my blog and have ideas or suggestions for me please reach out to me I would be very interested in learning from you as well.

I just had to take a quick minute to share my pure bliss this morning and thank you. Slowly, but surely I will get my act together. I will post on a more regular basis and most importantly I will share my story and experiences with you.

Have a super fantastic Friday my friends,

Simply Amy

DoTerra Membership

So I know I’m supposed to be taking things easy and focusing on these last 32 days of school. (Again, who’s counting right?) Realizing that most of you don’t know me….you couldn’t possibly know that it is near impossible for me to sit still. It seems the more that I have going on in my life the better everything is. At present we are fairly settled in our new home, I have done more interior decorating than I thought was possible under my current conditions, I’m 7 months pregnant, have my Ebay store back up and running (near full capacity) and then this past weekend I gave in and enrolled in DoTerra’s membership. With the end of school in sight and having decided to put pursing a PhD program on hold for the time being. I fear I am going to be bored. Wait, you have three children you say to yourself, how could you be bored? I really have no idea, I just prefer to remain gainfully employed at all times. I have this weird obsession that it would be nice to have hobbies that pay me.

Anyway, I have been learning about and slowing incorporating essential oils into my family’s daily life for about two years now. I’m not going to lie; when my sister-in-law started talking about them I was fairly certain that she was crazy. Then my mother-in-law jumped on board and started talking about them. While still skeptical I listened to them, watched from afar and finally decided to check things out for myself. Having no idea what I was doing I purchased the Family Physician Kit at the time I purchased they did not have the beadlets.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 5.35.19 PM

They do however look rather fun, I might have to give them a try. I have a post in regard to this first purchase, but I’ll just recap to keep you from having to flip back and forth. I also purchased the 3rd edition of this book Modern Essentials.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 5.36.59 PM

It looks like they are now on the 7th edition, maybe I need to invest a few dollars and see what’s changed. I started looking online for “recipes” and started making my own cleaners. Through the years I have moved onto applying directly to the body and diffusing into the air.

I probably don’t make full use of my oils, but now with my new membership I totally plan to. I now have access to special offers and discounted prices that will assist in my exploration. For instance, each day this week they have buy one get one (BOGO) offerings. Today is purchase spearmint get a free peppermint essential oil. I have to admit I have and use peppermint, but have not had the pleasure of trying out the spearmint. This is the perfect opportunity. Also with the holidays coming up an essential oil might make a nice gift?! I don’t know, I’ve never done this before.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 5.39.59 PM

I’m sharing this with you because if you have been thinking about checking out the DoTerra product offerings I would love to assist you in your journey as I grow on mine. I have previously posted about some of the uses my family and I use the oils for. I’m going to work to grow this section of my blog as I set out to learn more about them. As with anything this is not a one size fits all. However, I know that everyone cares about their family’s well-being and ensure their children are safe. It couldn’t hurt to save a few bucks along the way could it?

I realize that a majority of the essential oils are going to seem pricey at first. That’s why I would recommend one or two. Slowing incorporate them, learn about them and see if you like them before making a commitment. You can experience first-hand just how less is more here. The small bottle of oil seems to last longer than possible and hold more possibilities than you realized. Once you become more comfortable move to mix and create your own scents. Or walk away, no harm in trying something only to find out it’s not for you, right? I should take a photo of my original kit, there is a lot in most of the bottles. I’m not sure if these oils have a shelf life, but I need to start using them more and stop worrying about the cost, I bought them to use them!

In my first member order I indulged and purchased “Holiday Joy.” Here is the description directly from the website.

Holiday Joy

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 5.41.58 PM

“Hearken back to a simpler time with the traditional holiday scents of Siberian Fir, Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Cassia, Douglas Fir, Nutmeg and Vanilla. You’ll fill your home with memories as you tantalize your senses with the inviting fragrances of the season, embracing all who gather with the warmth of the holidays.”

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 5.41.04 PM

I choose not to use any sort of air fresheners in our home and I don’t have any candles as I don’t feel comfortable with open flames, especially with small children so candles are out. Instead I run a scent through my diffuser. If you aren’t familiar with what a diffuser is, it’s sort of like a humidifier. I put cool, clean water in, add a few drops of essential oil and enjoy! This fall I have found myself running a lot of OnGuard to assist in keeping us from getting sick. This scent is similar to that and might just get me in the holiday mood. I especially have a soft spot for Vanilla, paired with Cinnamon; you cannot go wrong, right? As soon as I get my shipment in the mail I will be sure to share an update with you.

I have a girlfriend that makes some amazing sugar scrubs. I have reached out to her to see what she is presently utilizing to “scent” these scrubs, if you will. I might see if she would be willing to make me some plain, unscented scrubs for me to pair with my favorite scents and give as small Christmas presents for friends and co-workers. It would give my friends a chance to try out items before purchasing. We’ll see what she comes back with. My secret hope is to give her some to trial and get her and her clients hooked on the amazing scents. (Bwhahah, Rachel if you’re reading this I would suppose the jig is up.)

Anyway, if you are interested you are welcome to discretely follow my journey via the blog. If you find yourself curious I would recommend browsing the DoTerra website. There is a lot of good, free information out there. Pinterest also seems to have a lot of great uses/ideas. If you have questions or inquiries please feel free to reach out to me. I know for a fact I am not always going to know the answer, but I have some great resources and would be willing to figure out and responded as needed.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!!

I can say this now as we are a little over a week from Thanksgiving, which just happens to be my absolute favorite holiday.
